Portfolio evaluation

A teacher certified in Quebec evaluates your child's annual portfolio, for young people in Secondary 1 to 5. The evaluation includes a detailed, commented grid, competency by competency, to give the family a complete picture of the work done over the year. School Success Academy then reports the final grade to Quebec's Ministry of Education, once the grid has been returned to the family.

This service is not offered for elementary students. For elementary, see our tutoring packages instead.

Tutoring packages at exclusive rates

Our packages are blocks of one-on-one tutoring hours purchased upfront, reserved for homeschooling families, from elementary through secondary school. By committing to a full block rather than paying by the hour, you get a rate well below our regular pay-as-you-go rate of $50/hr. The hours you buy are yours to use at your own pace over 12 months. Registration happens over the phone with an advisor: book a call whenever you're ready.

How a package works

Frequently asked questions about our services for homeschooling families

Which services are available for elementary students, and which are secondary only?

Tutoring packages are available from elementary through secondary school, in both the French and English sectors. Portfolio evaluation is for Secondary 1 to 5 students in the French sector. Online courses in the fall and winter sessions are for Secondary 4 and 5 students in the French sector. An elementary family can therefore use our tutoring packages, but not portfolio evaluation or online courses.

How does a tutoring package work for a homeschooling family?

You buy a full block of one-on-one tutoring hours, either 35, 70, or 140 hours, paid in a single payment at the time of purchase. Committing to the whole block is what earns the reduced rate: it isn't a discount that kicks in as you use more hours. You then spread the hours out at your own pace over 12 months. The hours can go toward a single subject or be split across several, and they can also be shared among siblings in the same family. The tutor sends a summary of what was covered after each session, then a full progress report for every block of 10 hours. All sessions are online and recorded.

Why do I need to speak with an advisor to buy a tutoring package?

The right number of hours depends on the subjects involved, how many children are taking part, and the pace of your learning project. A short call lets us go over all of that with you, confirm that a tutor is available in the right subject, and discuss payment options before you commit. It's also how we confirm your status as a homeschooling family, since this rate is reserved for you.

What is the DEM, and why do homeschooling families need to contact it?

The Direction de l'enseignement à la maison (DEM) is the branch of Quebec's Ministry of Education that oversees homeschooling families. It's the body that receives the homeschooling notice and each child's annual learning project. School Success Academy does not take part in that process: our portfolio evaluation, online courses, and tutoring packages complement the learning project once it has been filed with the DEM.

Do School Success Academy's online courses replace the learning project?

No. The online courses offered in the fall session and the winter session add to the learning project, they don't replace it. These courses target specific subjects where a Secondary 4 or 5 child needs a retake or a full course, often ahead of a ministry exam or to meet a CEGEP prerequisite. The rest of the learning project remains the homeschooling family's responsibility.

Why are some subjects not eligible for portfolio evaluation?

Subjects that carry a mandatory ministry exam, such as Français de 2e secondaire, require an official in-person evaluation, separate from portfolio evaluation. For that type of subject in Secondary 4 and 5, School Success Academy's online courses are a solution, since they include preparation for the ministry exam. For a ministry-exam subject at another grade level, such as Français de 2e secondaire, the school service centre remains the resource to contact for evaluation.

What are the deadlines for School Success Academy's portfolio evaluation?

For the current year, the registration deadline for portfolio evaluation is March 26, 2027. The portfolio must then be submitted for grading no later than June 4, 2027. School Success Academy's graders then need time to evaluate each portfolio, share results, report grades, and prepare report cards ahead of the ministry's grade submission deadline.

What does a homeschooling family receive after portfolio evaluation?

For Secondary 1 to 3, the family receives an evaluation grid detailing the grade for each competency, with the grader's comments, along with a report card showing the final grade. For Secondary 4 and 5, School Success Academy provides the same thing, with the difference that the grade is also reported to Quebec's Ministry of Education: it then appears on the ministry's official record. The same reporting process applies to the fall and winter session online courses.

Do all subjects evaluated by School Success Academy count toward the diploma?

All Secondary 4 and 5 subjects reported by School Success Academy to the ministry earn credits, but they don't all count the same way. Some subjects, such as French, math, and science, are mandatory for earning the Diplôme d'Études Secondaires (DES). Others, such as Spanish or visual arts, are optional: they aren't required for the diploma, but they still earn the child credits.

Where can homeschooling families find support to create their learning project?

School Success Academy does not help create the learning project that a portfolio is based on: we only evaluate the evidence we're given, based on the competencies specific to each subject. For help creating and organizing a learning project, the DEM publishes a requirements guide, and the AQED (Association québécoise pour l'éducation à domicile) offers community support and guidance to homeschooling families across Quebec. These are the two best resources for that step.
